Do I need a membership to attend Open Studio?
Open Studio is open to the public and does not require a membership.
Do I need pottery experience?
Prior experience is required to reserve a pottery wheel because Open Studio does not include instruction.
Hand-building is beginner-friendly and does not require previous experience.
Is instruction included with my reservation?
No. Open Studio is designed for independent studio use and does not include formal instruction. If you are new to pottery or would like guided instruction, we recommend starting with one of our classes.
What is included with my reservation?
Your reservation includes access to the studio workspace, shared studio equipment and supplies, and firing at no additional charge. You will only need to purchase clay from the studio or bring your own cone 5 clay.
How much time do I get?
Each reservation includes 60 minutes of creation time, with additional time set aside for setup and cleanup.
If you would like to work for multiple hours, you can reserve back-to-back time slots, such as 1 PM and 2 PM. If you decide during your visit that you would like to stay longer, speak with the Open Studio host. In most cases, they can extend your visit as long as space is available.
Do I need to bring my own tools?
No. Our studios have shared pottery tools and equipment available for Open Studio use.
You are also welcome to bring your own pottery tools if you prefer working with them.
Can I bring my own clay?
Yes. You are welcome to bring your own cone 5 clay or purchase clay during your visit.
We offer SPS Sea Mix 6 clay in quantities between 3 and 25 pounds. Pricing is based on the amount purchased, with the following reference points:
3 lbs: $10
10 lbs: $17
15 lbs: $22
25 lbs: $35
Is firing included?
Yes. Firing is included with your Open Studio reservation at no additional charge.
Can I leave unfinished work at the studio?
Yes. Open Studio includes our designated Keep Wet section for storing wet work between visits while you continue working on a piece.
If you need to trim work on the wheel, be sure to reserve a wheel for your next visit. Once pottery becomes bone dry, it is considered abandoned and will be discarded. This helps us prevent unnecessary silica dust from being created in the studio.
When will my work be ready to glaze?
Work submitted for firing is typically ready to glaze approximately 10 days after your visit.
Once your work has been bisque fired, you can reserve a glazing appointment during an upcoming Open Studio time.
Firing times may vary depending on kiln schedules and studio volume.
How long will you hold my pottery?
Finished work is held for up to one month.
Bisqueware awaiting glazing is held for up to two months.

Can I use Open Studio for production pottery?
No. Open Studio is intended for personal and recreational pottery making and is not designed for production work.
Do I need to clean my workspace?
Yes. Everyone using Open Studio is responsible for cleaning their workspace, tools, and equipment before leaving.
We use wet-cleaning practices throughout our studios to help minimize clay dust.
Can I bring a friend with me?
Anyone actively creating in the studio should have their own appropriate reservation or be included in a reservation type that allows multiple participants.
Where is Open Studio available?
Open Studio is currently offered at select Seatown Pottery and Eastside Pottery locations. Availability, days, and reservation types vary by studio, so check the booking calendar for the most current options.
How do I reserve Open Studio time?
Choose your preferred studio, reservation type, date, and time through our online booking system. Advance reservations are recommended, especially for pottery wheels.
