Hand-Building Fundamentals

In this six week hand-building workshop, students create a collection of functional and sculptural pieces. The course builds foundational skills including slab construction, pinch shaping, coil work, and bending or altering slabs to form flowing contours and pockets. Students also learn how to design and support wall mounted pieces, create strong seams and hanging systems, and use darting, carving, paddling, and surface texturing to add movement and character. The workshop concludes with surface decoration using slip or underglaze and a full glazing session.
